In the 1901 census, She was living with her Grandfather Richard Downes, along with her siblings Frank 12yrs, Harry 10yrs, Joseph 9yrs, and Edith 18yrs and also her aunt Mary E Downes. in Gore Lane Chorley,
In the 1911 census, Bessie is listed as the head of the household living with siblings, Frank 22yrs (Joiner), Henry 20yrs (Grocer shop assistant), Joseph 19yrs (Baker Assistant) also her grandfather Richard was living there he would be approx 88yrs (the census has the wrong date of birth and age listed)
