Family Memories

Ann was born 30 April 1823 and baptised at the Unitarian Chapel, Dean Row. The Dean Row Chapel Register of Births shows her parents as Joseph FORD, farmer and weaver and Elizabeth, his wife, whose maiden name was BRACEGIRDLE of the township of Chorley in the Parish of Wilmslow in the County of Chester. Ann is noted as being the 8th Child of this couple.

A marriage was recorded on 4th March 1848 at the Parish Church in the Parish of Wilmslow in the County of Chester between Ann FORD (full age from the Hough, Wilmslow, daughter of Joseph FORD, farmer) and William CROMPTON (full age, Bachelor, Engine Driver of Kent Street, Liverpool, son of John CROMPTON, Collier). The Curate was Edward Cole? and both Ann and William signed in the presence of Ann's brothers, John and Thomas FORD.

We have not determined what happened to Ann's first husband William CROMPTON, but by the end of the next year, 1849, a second marriage was registered (see below):

Marriage: 18 Oct 1849 St George, Everton, Lancashire, England
Mark Howarth - 26 Warehouseman Bachelor of 1 Moss Terrace Everton
Anne Crompton - 26 Widow of 22 Basnett St Liverpool
Groom's Father: James Howarth, Gentleman
Bride's Father: Joseph Ford, Farmer
Witness: James Bathgate; Isaac Harris
Married by Banns by: W W Ewbank Mr.
Register: Marriages 1848 - 1854, Page 51, Entry 101

A death has been located for a William CROMPTON in Liverpool in 1848, which may explain why Ann remarried, however at this stage we can not confirm if this is the correct William.

Burial: 28 Sep 1848 St Mary the Virgin, Deane, Lancashire, England
William Crompton -
Age: 26 yrs
Abode: Liverpool
Buried by: Theophilus Sharp Curate
Register: Burials 1844 - 1853, Page 140, Entry 1113

Ann and her husband Mark HOWARTH and children can be found in the censuses from 1851 to 1881.  Mark HOWARTH died in 1886.  Ann can be found on the 1891 census, but not on the 1901, which may mean she passed away between these two dates.  As yet the resting place for Ann & Mark have not been found.

Mark HOWARTH was the witness to Ann's nephew's  (son of her sister Hannah WILSON (nee FORD) marriage:

Marriage: 26 Mar 1854 St George, Everton, Lancashire, England
Charles Wilson - 24 Warehouseman Bachelor of Phoebe Ann St
Margaret James - 20 Spinster of Phoebe Ann St
Groom's Father: Thomas Wilson, Station Master
    Bride's Father: John James, Watchmaker
    Witness: Mark Howarth; Eliza Wilson
Married by Banns by: Robt. C King
    Register: Marriages 1848 - 1854, Page 213, Entry 426

Also on the 1861 census, Ann's nephew Alfred BOOTH (son of her sister Sarah BOOTH (nee FORD) can be found living with the HOWARTH family.
